Build Your Own
Adirondack Chair
HS-01 • Classes begin: Mar 24 (End date: Apr 14) • 12 hours (4
Sessions) Wed: 6:30-9:30
The Adirondack Chair was created by Thomas Lee in 1903. He owned a summer
home on Lake Chaplain in upstate New York and wanted comfortable outdoor
furniture. After many tries - he came up with this unique chair. The original
chair was made with eleven pieces of wood cut from a single board. These chairs
are more popular today then ever. Their flat armrests are suitable to hold food
or beverages thus eliminating the need for a table. This class will walk the
novice woodworker, or those who wish to be, through all the steps and use of the
tools needed to make their very own Adirondack chair. You will become familiar
with all the combinations of straight lines, flat planes and gentle curves that
are the signature of the traditional Adirondack chair. Though there are many
variations of the chair, the class will focus on the building of the "classic"
form. You will make a chair - all supplies and plans are included. You will be
able to make more at home as you will have the knowledge and the plans.
Room: Remodeling Shop • Instructor: Kevin Kramer • Tuition: $199
Kevin Kramer is a vocational teacher with a interest in carpentry and

CHAIR CANING
HS-03 • Classes begin: Mar 1 (End date: Apr 12) • 18 Hours (6 Sessions) • Mon:
6:30-9:30
Recane that old chair and give it new life! Hand caning, pressed caning, and
rush will be taught. Please bring your chair to the first class so that specific
equipment and supplies can be determined. There is an additional cost for that
equipment and supplies, which are available from the instructor. You will be
caning the first night of class! The size of your chair is limited to what you
can carry. There is no storage available for chairs between classes. Don't have
a chair? Contact the instructor who will have some available at a nominal cost.
The instructor will have the required material available for purchase during
class.
Room: Carpentry Shop • Instructor: Michael Samek • Tuition: $99
Mike Samek took his first caning class at Keefe Tech about 13 years ago.
Since then he has turned this hobby into a small home-based business. Mike was
curious to learn this dying craft and has found that there are a lot of people
with chairs that need caning, and interesting stories about why the owners just
don't throw the chairs away. Mike has worked with antique shops, as well as
private customers. His business "Chairs for All Seasons" advocates that an old
chair never be thrown away! Mike is looking forward to sharing this craft with
others.

Staging: The art
of showcasing a home for sale, for rent, or for special occasions
HS-08 • Classes held: Mar 4 & 11 • 5 Hours (2 Sessions) • Thu:
6:30-9:00
This class is for realtors, home owners, would-be home designers, and even
contractors; essentially anyone who needs to maximize the visual impact of a
property. The techniques learned will increase the overall purchase appeal of a
property and enable you to identify cost-effective design changes from the minor
cosmetic change to more significant obvious structural repairs or improvements.
All participants will learn interior/exterior design improvements and the use of
simple staging accessories.
The course is structured in two classes that will be 2 weeks apart:
1. Class One - Interior/Exterior Home Review 101: This class will show you how
to:
a) Clearly identify your home redesign objective(s) and/or issues;
b) Quickly and precisely complete a home review inside and out;
c) Prioritize and budget (time & cost) your review findings;
d) Construct a plan of action and quality control.
Using a detailed inspection checklist specifically designed by the instructor,
students are guided through the whole house (inside and outside) to identify and
address repairs, maintenance issues, and design "dos" and "don'ts". This is an
essential step in preparing the house for your objective and will help you
enhance and hide "home issues", as needed, and show you how to de-clutter, and
budget for the time and cost-effective changes.
2. Class Two - Staging: This class will teach you the budget-friendly tricks
that are at your disposal to help you create the desired "WOW" factor. Home
staging is about illusions and emotions, making a house look bigger, brighter,
cleaner, warmer, and desirable. There will be an emphasis on presentation and
appearance. N.B. Staging is a real-estate service that has a proven record for
increasing the sale price and reducing the time for a property on the market
(example: LA Times article on March 16, 2008 - Zttp://articles.latimes.com/2008/mar/16/realestate/re-staging16).
Room: 217 • Instructor: Céline Riard • Tuition: $49
Céline Riard is an Interior Designer and Engineer trained in Paris and
Montréal. She is the Founder of Chic Redesign (www.chicredesign.com). She has
worked on both residential and commercial projects and is also a mural artist
and staging consultant
WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY HOUSE?
HS-09 • Class held: Apr 1 • 2 Hours (1 Session) • Thu: 6:30-8:30
Is your home aging gracefully? Are your mechanical systems (heat, plumbing,
electric, etc.) in good condition? Where does water in my basement come from? Is
the settling you notice normal or an indicator of a bigger problem? A home is a
major asset and you should take advantage of any opportunity to correct those
small defects before they become a huge problem. Most home owners don't know
about preventative maintenance that is required of the systems in their home.
Understanding and implementing these simple maintenance plans can help to
eliminate costly repairs or replacements. Class size is limited to 10 students.
Room: 208 • Instructor: Rory Warren • Tuition: $39
Rory Warren is the owner of Warren Home Inspections, located in Hopkinton,
MA. He has performed thousands of home inspections for home buyers and sellers
since forming the company. He holds a MA Home Inspection License, holds the
designation of Certified Home Inspector from the American Society of Home
Inspectors and is a MA licensed Construction Supervisor.
