Advanced Crochet Techniques

This is the class my past students have requested. In this Advanced Crochet Techniques course, we will explore expanding/decreasing stitches, Tunisian stitching as well as stitch combination to add pattern variety to our projects. Please understand there will be an assumption on the instructor's part that students are proficient in basic vocabulary and simple stitches. Crochet for Beginners
CR-02 • Classes begin: Mar 16 (End date: Apr 13) • 8 Hours (4 Sessions) • Tue: 6:30-8:30
Crochet is a timeless hobby; fun, portable, easy (once you have the knack!) and the perfect art form to create gifts for fashion, home and baby. This class is for beginners who want to learn the basics of this medium. Bring to each class a size "J" hook and 1 skein of inexpensive yarn (available at WalMart, K-Mart, A.C. Moore, etc. for around $5). Students will learn to chain, single crochet and double crochet - every stitch needed for flat projects like scarves, pot holders, afghans and blankets. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Jill Roberson, a long-time educator at Keefe Tech, has been crocheting for more years than she cares to admit. Her house is filled with cozy blankets and pot holders and every baby born to the family is welcomed with a soft blanket made with love.

Crochet Wire Bracelets
CR-03 • Classes held: Mar 3 & 10 • 6 Hours (2 Sessions) • Wed: 6:30-9:30
Take your crocheting skills to the next level. If you can crochet with yarn you can learn to crochet with wire to make unique jewelry. Using fine silver wire you can create a delicate, Victorian style bracelet or use colored wire to make a bracelet with a contemporary look. In the first session you will learn to crochet a chain of fine silver wire and beads into a delicate, multi-strand bracelet. During session two you will learn the skills to crochet the wire and beads into a cuff-style bracelet. The instructor will discuss how to expand these skills to make necklaces as well. Prerequisite: Participants must be familiar with simple crochet stitches (chain, slip stitch, single and double crochet). Tuition includes all materials.

KNITTING FOR BEGINNERS
CR-04 • Classes begin: Mar 1 (End date: Apr 12) • 15 Hours (6 Sessions) • Mon: 6:30-9:00
Learn basic knitting skills that will provide you with an interesting and relaxing hobby. This course is designed for everyone new to knitting and for those of you who want a refresher course. Participants will learn the knit and purl stitches, as well as how to increase and decrease. By the end of the course you will make at least one of the following items: a scarf, a poncho, or a baby blanket. Supplies for the first class are: one skein of plain, light colored bulky weight yarn; a pair of size 11 or 13 straight knitting needles, preferably bamboo or wood; size "G" or "H" crochet hook; scissors; a tape measure; and a notebook and pen/pencil. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Introduction to Hand Quilting - NO MACHINE USED! - NEW!

While it may be true that "everything old is new again", quilts have never gone out of style. From heirloom runners across a holiday table to beautiful contemporary wall art commemorating the birth of a child or other significant family event, there is nothing like a quilt! If you can sew on a button, use a ruler, use your creativity, and admire the art of quilting, this is the class for you! This course will cover the basics of a quilt's components, discuss the tools used, explore the mechanics of piecing material and appreciate the beauty of hand quilting. A quiet and completely transportable art, this course uses no machines. Each student will complete a one-of-a-kind quilted table center place mat. Class requirements - To the first class, please bring a notebook and pad. Instructor will provide fabric swatches, tools to be borrowed during class, batting, thread and pins.

INTRODUCTION TO Polymer Clay TECHNIQUES- NEW!
CR-06 • Classes begin: Mar 9 (End date: Apr 6) • 8 Hours (4 Sessions) • Tue: 6:30-8:30
This class will offer you an overview of the artistic possibilities available using polymer clay. Learn what brands of polymer clay are available, why they are different and which brands to choose for which type of project. Practice a few of the basic yet infinite techniques used to make elements for jewelry, desk accessories, picture frames, etc. using this colorful medium, using "tools" that you already have around your house. Cure your treasures in your home oven and then use your pieces and imagination to create truly unique pieces for yourself, for gifts, or even for sale! Learn why polymer clay is one of the most economical and versatile art mediums, As a minimum, you will be completing jewelry components, at least two "canes", and 3-D flowers. A variety of printed materials will be provided for your reference and will provide you will all the basic information to develop into a successful polymer clay artist. Please bring a small, covered plastic container to class to safely transport your creations home for curing (until your items are cured, they are very soft and can be easily distorted), and a small Ziploc baggie or waxed/deli paper to preserve any leftover pieces of clay either for use the following week, or continued work on your creations at home. A variety of printed materials will be provided for your reference and will provide you will all the basic information to develop into a successful polymer clay artist. Tuition includes supplies.

Lori Schneider is a crafty individual with a degree in Biology, which inspired her to look to nature for color combinations and designs to create wearable and usable and practical art. As a photographer, she also focuses upon the overlooked details found in nature, which often give her even more ideas for her next project.

Magazine Basket- NEW!

Store your magazines in this tote style basket. Two rows of standard size magazines fit on either side of the center handle. The base measures approximately 4" x 16". This basket is a great space saver. Bring the following tools if you have them: awl or flat head screwdriver (as narrow a head as possible), sturdy scissors or garden hand pruners, measuring tape, pencil, 12 spring loaded clothespins. You should label your tools with your name and if you have a small box to keep them in, it is helpful. The instructor will have tools for students to share. Tuition includes materials.

Market Basket- NEW!

This classic style market basket will have a filled bottom. The base will measure approximately 8" x 12". An assortment of reed in different sizes and various colors will be provided so that each student can create their own unique basket. Debra Rolfe has been weaving as a hobby and teaching weaving to both children and adults for many years. Her work is sold at local arts and craft fairs in the fall. Recently, she received a "People’s Choice Award" for her basket "In Harmony" at the Northeast Basketmakers Guild's annual convention. Debra is a member of the Northeast Basketmakers Guild and the National Basketry Organization.

QUILTING FOR BEGINNERS
CR-09 • Classes begin: Mar 17 (End date: Apr 28) • 15 Hours (6 Sessions) • Wed: 6:30-9:00
Learn the basics of modern quilt-making while making a small, square table topper that can also be used as a wall-hanging. The class will cover fabric selection, rotary cutting, piecing, basic machine quilting, and attaching borders and bindings. We will also discuss how to apply your new skills to larger quilts. Whether you are interested in traditional or contemporary styled quilts, this is the class to learn the basics of all quiltmaking. Students need to bring basic sewing supplies (needles, thread, fabric scissors), a ruler, a pencil, and fabric scraps, if available, to the first class. After the first class, students should also bring a sewing machine to class.

Joan Sebastian has been a teacher and a quilter for over 30 years. She has taught quilting to adults and children as young as 8 years old.

Scrapbooking for Beginners & Enthusiasts
CR-10 • Classes begin: Mar 17 (End date: Apr 14) • 10 Hours (5 Sessions) • Wed: 6:30-8:30
This course will introduce participants to the materials and tools of scrapbooking. Many beginning scrapbookers are wary of starting a scrapbook because they have too many photos that need to be archived. Participants will be given tips on organizing photos, choosing representative photos for scrapbook pages, and designing simple layouts that they can repeat throughout a scrapbook. Already established scrapbookers are encouraged to participate in this course, as it will provide both the motivation for completing pages and plenty of idea pages to work from. Beginners are asked to bring photos and an album (a post bound or strap and hinge album available at area craft stores.) Other tools and materials will be provided. Nancy D'Amato has been a scrapbooking enthusiast for almost 10 years. Although she has worked in mathematics education for 17 years, in 2005, Nancy established "simply designed", a design consultation firm specializing in wedding and event invitations, announcements, greeting cards, and personalized stationery (www.simplydesignedforyou.com.) The business has recently been expanded to offer scrapbooking and card making workshops. The motto of "simply designed" is "keep it simple." This extends to Nancy's scrapbooking techniques: simple layouts, classic color combinations, a minimum of flashy embellishments.

STAINED GLASS: BEGINNERS
CR-11 • Classes begin: Mar 17 (End date: May 12) • 20 Hours (8 Sessions) • Wed: 7:00-9:30
This course is for those who have never cut a piece of glass before. (However all students are welcome.) You will be learning the copperfoil method, often referred to as the Tiffany style of stained glass. We will begin cutting the first night. Using clear glass, you will complete a practice piece by the second night. This project will prepare you to begin on the flat project of your choice. Tools are available for in-school use only. The approximate cost of materials for your project will depend on what you choose. You could spend about $75 to $100 on supplies. Tools to do the craft at home will vary in quality and are an additional cost. There is a wide range of tools available for purchase at the stained glass stores. I will introduce you to a variety of them. A supply list and a list of suppliers will be distributed to you at the first class. Precaution - Lead is used in the class. Women who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant should consult their doctor before registering.

Michele Dillon has been teaching stained glass in the MetroWest area for over 20 years. She began her career as an apprentice in 1980. Over the years she has created custom windows and lamps for both residential and commercial customers. Some of Michele's students have continued on their own and sold their work and have become award winners.
