ART
Although this class is primarily for beginners or those with some experience in painting and drawing, advanced students are also welcome. Working from still-life (and possibly a model for portraiture as well), we will learn a step-by-step method for starting a successful painting: learning elements of composition and establishing an underpainting; describing the flow of light through the study of value; using the temperature of color and perspective to create an illusion of space; and beginning to learn color mixing and brushwork. We will discuss a little art history and philosophy to encourage a conceptual approach to the activity of painting, and discuss the many possibilities inherent in this powerful and flexible medium. Note that we will learn an alternative method to using toxic solvents in the studio. For the first class, there will be an introduction to the class, a review of the supply list, a demonstration of the materials, and some drawing practice. Please bring pencils, vine charcoal, or other drawing tools, an eraser, and a sketchbook (11 x 14 is a good size) to the first class. Those who are more comfortable with acrylic paint are welcome to use them, although the teaching emphasis will be on oils. Prerequisite: basic drawing skills. Room: Commercial Art Dianna Vosburg Tuition: $119
